You could call hair jigs "old school", because they were the staple in the 50's and 60's, but they've never stopped catching fish, especially smallmouth bass. My 3 most popular styles are fox hair, deer hair, and marabou.
Each has its own niche. Deer hair is more of a silhouette and does not have as much action as the other two. I use deer in stained water or whenever I want the jig to displace more water and I do not need much action. Marabou is the opposite extreme. It compresses and gives a very subtle silhouette with very little bulk. It's incredible in clear water and when the fish are in a neutral mood. Right in between the two extremes is fox hair. It gives a silhouette but it also has a lot of "flowing" action when you work it. Fox hair works in pretty much all situations I've tried it.
Deer and fox hair jigs are tied on an Arky head with a fiber guard that works well in wood and rock. Marabou jigs are tied on an exposed hook minnow style jighead with 3-d eyes to imitate a baitfish.
